Rovos Rail was founded in 1989 by Rohan Vos, who rebuilt classic carriages into what the company runs today from its private station at Capital Park, Pretoria. Suites come in three classes, from the Pullman at about 76 square feet to the Royal at about 172 — half a carriage, with a private lounge and a Victorian bathtub. The train carries candlelit dining cars, a lounge car, and an observation car with an open-air balcony at the rear.
The classic journeys range from two to sixteen nights across Southern and East Africa. Evenings aboard are formal, and several itineraries carry a 1920s-themed dinner, a nod to the era the train is built to recall. The absence of screens is a stated design decision rather than an omission: passengers are pointed instead to the landscape, the dining car, and one another.
For American travelers, the company publishes pricing in US dollars for every journey and suite class, with Pullman suites priced at roughly $900 to $1,500 per person per night across the fleet. Departure dates and dollar pricing for the 2027 season are now published across the classic journeys, opening the year to American booking. Figures are converted from Rovos Rail's published rand rates and confirmed at booking.
